HYDERABAD: Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi hosted an Iftar for Muslim children of orphanages and madarsas at a function hall near Masab Tank here on Wednesday evening. He consumed haleem and dates along with them.

The actor-turned-politician was dressed in the traditional Muslim attire. He sported a cap and wore white kurta and pyjama.

Addressing the children, Chiranjeevi initially spoke to them in Urdu. He laboured to utter the few words in Urdu and promised to give a speech in that language during Ramzan festivities next year. Switching to Telugu, the film star said he wanted to organise the Iftar for the most deprived sections when the proposal was made to him. He decided to organise it as no one had done before. The Iftars were a good tradition to promote communal harmony, he said. Zaheeruddin Ali Khan, Managing Editor of Siasat daily, said the Iftars were generally politicised. But, this one was held with a difference. Chiranjeevi mingled with the children who were shifted by buses from various parts of the city. He also went round the exclusive enclosure for women.
