Stress on pronounced role for sports

Chennai: The valedictory function of the refresher course on ‘Fitness and Nutrition,’ conducted by the Department of Exercise Physiology and Nutrition of the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University, took place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Tuesday.

The course highlighted food habits with focus on nutrition food planning for nearly 300 participants. Experts in the field of exercise physiology, nutrition, fitness and aerobics delivered lectures as part of the course for physical education teachers of various state schools.

G.V. Selvam, Pro-Chancellor, VIT University, Vellore, while delivering the valedictory address stressed on the need for a more pronounced role for sports and physical education in the academic curriculum. “Students need role models for motivation. Achievers in the field of sports in schools have to be awarded, and sports personalities invited to schools and colleges. Enough time has to be allotted for physical education and sports before and after academic hours,” he added, while praising the initiative taken by the TNPESU in conducting the course.

Dr. R. Thirumalaisamy, Vice-Chancellor, TNPESU, revealed that there would be a recommendation to include physical education as an optional paper in next year’s curriculum.

Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu Vice-President S. Kumarasamy also presided over the function. — Sports Reporter
