Hit-and-run: accused booked afresh under new section

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Utsav Bhasin, the accused in the recent BMW hit-and-run case in the capital, has been booked afresh under a non-bailable section of the Indian Penal Code following the death of one of the victims, Anuj Singh, at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here on September 12.

The Delhi police on Tuesday informed Justice Veena Birbal of the High Court that they had amended the earlier FIR and added Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) to it.

Former Navy chief S.M. Nanda’s grandson, Sanjeev Nanda, was recently sentenced to five-year rigorous imprisonment under Section 304 (Part-II) of the IPC in the BMW hit-and-run case of 1999 in which he had mowed down six persons on Lodhi Road here.

Nineteen-year-old Utsav, son of a Delhi-based industrialist, had rammed his BMW into the two-wheeler on which Anuj was pillion-riding with his friend Mrigank. They were returning home after watching a late-night Hindi movie. .
