Plan to install sign boards along railway line

Coimbatore: The Railway Police have planned to install caution sign boards, fencing along the railway line and awareness generation programmes to reduce the deaths on railway tracks, Superintendent of Police, Railway Police, M.C. Sarangan, said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters after inspecting security measures at the Coimbatore Railway Junction, he said that on an average 2,000 persons a year were getting killed on the tracks across the State.

Nearly 30 per cent to 35 per cent of the deaths remain unidentified. Podanur Railway Police alone had 94 such deaths on tracks this year while Coimbatore accounted for 50.

Prepaid autorickshaw system

The Railway police also plan to introduce prepaid auto rickshaw system at the Coimbatore Junction.On prevention of crime on trains and railway stations, Mr. Sarangan said that officers have been told strictly ensure hundred per cent free registration of crime. The Railway Helpline number 99625 00500 was getting at least seven calls a day.In the wake of terror strikes across the country, the Railway Police have also stepped up access control at railway stations besides frisking the passengers and their luggage.
