Commercialisation of road medians opposed
Staff Reporter
Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC) has appealed to the District Collector, V. Palanikumar, to stop commercialisation of road medians and ensure that strict guidelines were followed in permitting sponsorship for construction of road medians.
The secretary of CCC, K. Kathirmathiyon, in a memorandum said that centre medians had to be constructed on six lane Avinashi Road, from Upplipalayam to Airport Junction.
It is understood that the approval for the construction of the medians was awarded to a Chennai-based advertisement firm and was subsequently cancelled by the Government. The matter is pending before the District Collector for disposal.
Mr. Kathirmathiyon pointed out that recently the Supreme Court had ruled that no hoardings should be permitted on roadsides since they would distract the attention of the drivers.
Advertisements in the name of sponsors should not be permitted on road medians under any circumstances.
As per the norms only the logo of the sponsor were permitted but road medians sport huge advertisements. Further the logo details should have been submitted to the officials at the time of application itself.
The administration should invite applications only from the real sponsors who were interested to contribute to public cause and should be allowed to display their logo alone for one year as per the prescribed norms.
