Government ready to bear any burden for the sake of poor: Minister

Tiruchi Bureau

KARUR: By implementing the Re.1 per kg rice scheme in the State, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has brought his mentor late C.N. Annadurai’s cherished ideal of seeing spirituality in the smile of the needy to life in the latter’s centenary year. Many could not stomach the importance and the utility of the scheme to the poor, according to Forests Minister N. Selvaraj.

Launching the Re. I per kg rice scheme in the district at a fair price shop here on Tuesday, Mr. Selvaraj pointed out that Mr. Karunanidhi has dared to implement what many others could not even dream of.

The new scheme that is to be implemented from October 2 was also aimed at buffering the sufferings of the poor, who would benefit a lot through the supply of essential commodities at a subsidised price through fair price shops, the Minister pointed out.

The new rice scheme would be submitted through a total of 514 PDS shops in the district, 348 full time shops and 16 part time shops. An estimated 2,87,575 cardholders in the district would be eligible to get rice at the subsidized price. That would mean that there was an additional burden of Rs.77.16 crore annually from the district alone, Mr. Selvaraj claimed.

The Minister pointed out that the State Government was getting rice from the Central pool at the rate of Rs.8.50 and was distributing to the poor through the PDS shops for just Re.1 per kg, incurring an additional outflow of Rs.2,500 crore per annum. Supply of other essential commodities through the fair price shops meant an additional outflow of Rs.100 crore a year.

District Collector T.N. Venkatesh also spoke.

Karur MP K.C. Palanisamy, DMK district secretary Vasuki Muruegsan, MLAs P. Kamaraj (Krishnarayapuram), R. Manikkam (Kulithalai), District Panchayat Chairperson Poovai Ramesh Babu, Karur Municipal Chairperson P. Sivakamsundari, DMK State Weavers’ Wing secretary Paramathy A. Shanmugam and others spoke. District Revenue Officer Jawahar Shanthakumar welcomed the gathering while the Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies K. Sivaji proposed a vote of thanks.

Perambalur

About 1.55 lakh ration card holders in Perambalur district would benefit from the supply of rice at Re.1 a kg through the public distribution system.

Supply of the subsidised rice was inaugurated here by the Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology A. Raja on Tuesday. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Raja observed that over 1.86 crore card holders across the State would benefit from the scheme.

Claiming that Tamil Nadu was making rapid strides in various sectors, Mr. Raja said several new industries were coming up in the State. He blamed the previous All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government for the current power crisis as it failed to initiate steps for setting up new power plants.

The present government was taking all steps to increase generation and the situation would improve within a couple of months.

Collector Anil Meshram, MLA M. Rajkumar and officials spoke.
