New courses: university board of studies ignored

Special Correspondent

Academic Council’s approval sought for starting the courses

One-year Executive MBA and two-year Master of Human Resource Management courses proposed

Proposal to start Diploma in Nano Materials approved

SHIMOGA: The Directorate of Distance Education, Kuvempu University, has bypassed the Board of Studies and the Faculty while seeking approval from the Academic Council for introducing new courses. The Directorate brought up subject during the Academic Council meeting held at the Jnana Sahyadri on Tuesday.

The subject that was brought to the Academic Council ignoring the Board of Studies was relating to the introduction of one-year (two semesters) Executive MBA and two-year Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM) by the Directorate of Distance Education, in association with the International Corporate Business Management Studies (ICBMS) of Chennai.

Prof. Made Gowda, member of the Academic Council and Head of the Department of Management Studies, objected to tabling of the subject. He pointed out that there had been procedural mistake as the subject had been brought directly to the Academic Council seeking its approval without the subject being placed before the Board of Studies and the Faculty concerned. However, Vice-Chancellor B.S. Sherigara, who presided over the meeting on Tuesday, said the meeting could accord its approval as “we have gone ahead in the matter”. He said the matter could be placed before the Board of Studies and the Faculty later.

Another matter pertaining to the opening of the Centre for Nano Science and Technology Research at the Post Graduate Department of Bio Chemistry and Food Technology, Kuvempu University, Davangere, was deferred as suggested by the Vice Chancellor.

B. Madhusudan of the Postgraduate Department raised the issue urging members to give approval to start the centre as he had already made preliminary preparations . He urged the university to grant recognition to the Centre so that the required staff could be appointed.

Prof. Sherigara said the matter be deferred until the University Grants Commission (UGC) responded to the proposal of setting up such a centre. He informed that the UGC was particular that the centre should function as a multi-disciplinary department. He added that there was no need to start a research centre at the Postgraduate Department when there was a proposal to start one such centre in the university campus. However, Prof. Madhusudan could continue with his research work. But, Prof. Madhusudan expressed his disappointment and said all his efforts would go waste if the proposal to start the Centre at the Postgraduate Department was not given approval.

The meeting approved the proposal for the introduction of the Diploma in Nano Materials at the Post-Graduate Department of Chemistry. The Vice-Chancellor said that it could be a precursor for the opening of M.Tech. course .
