In need: Ko.Si. Mani, Co-operation Minister launching Re.1 per kg rice scheme, in Kumbakonam on Tuesday. KUMBAKONAM: The Re. 1 a kg rice scheme came into effect from Tuesday in Thanjavur district. The State Cooperation Minister Ko. Si. Mani inaugurated the scheme by distributing rice to card holders here. He said that people were happy about the scheme. “I participated in the function to launch the scheme at Chennai by the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Monday. I listened to people what they were talking after receiving the rice. They said that the quality of rice was good. By reducing the price, they could save money’, the Minister said. The District Collector, M. S. Shanmugham said that there were 6.69 lakh ration card holders in Thanjavur district. They consumed 13,000 tonnes every month. They had to spend Rs. 2.5 crore when the rice was sold at Rs. 2 per kg. Now they have to spend only Rs. 1.25 crore. Thus there is an indirect saving of Rs. 1.25 crores per month and Rs. 18 crores per year. Re. 1 per kg rice will be distributed through 1,063 fair price shops in the district from Tuesday. Co-operationdepartment officials have been instructed to ensure quality and proper weight while selling the rice. Electronic balances have been given to the shops to ensure the weight, he added. M. Karunakaran, District Revenue Officer, K. V. S. Kumar, Joint Registrar of Co-operatives, Durai Chandrasekaran and Mahesh Krishnaswamy, MLAs, Selvi Sivagnanam, Chairperson of Thanjavur District Panchayat council participated in the meeting. Tiruvarur“The Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has been implementing schemes conceived by late Annadurai. Re. 1 per kg rice scheme is one such promise made by Annadurai. It is apt that the scheme was launched on Annadurai’s birth centenary celebrations,” said U. Mathivanan, Dairy Development Minister here on Tuesday. He inaugurated the Re. 1 per kg rice scheme by distributing rice to card holders at Tiruvarur. He said that the State Government implemented Rs. 2 a kg rice scheme last year. Now the price has been reduced to Re. 1 per kg. This will benefit people below poverty line. Tiruvarur district has benefitted a lot under the present Government. Central University was going to be established on 700 acres of land. Government Medical College will start functioning from next year, he informed. The District Collector M. Chandrasekaran, said that there were 627 fair price shops in the district. All these shops would now sell rice at Re. 1 per kg to the 3,36,000 ration card holders in Tiruvarur district. Rs. 50 per package of essential commodities will also be introduced soon in the fair price shops.
