BANGALORE: Two upsets marked the opening round of the girls’ singles in the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) under-14 championship at the Bowring Institute courts here on Monday. Jasmine Kaur, playing a near flawless baseline game, overpowered sixth-seeded Nilushi Fernando of Sri Lanka 6-1, 6-2, while Rimpledeep Kaur humbled eighth-seeded Aishwarya Nunes 6-1, 6-1. The top seed, Theiviya Selvaraj of Malaysia advanced to the second round with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Rajbir Kaur. Malaysian top seed Agil Mohammed Syed took less than 35 minutes to dump wild card A. Puranic 6-0, 6-0 in the boys’ singles. Nischay Rawal, meanwhile, sprang a surprise defeating fancied Malaysian Khoer Yang 6-1, 6-3. The other Indians to move up were Vishal Passi, Vinod Gowda and Yash Deshpande.
