‘Integrate treatment of AIDS with other diseases’
Staff Reporter
Bangalore: The best way to remove the stigma faced by persons affected with HIV/AIDS is to integrate their treatment with other ailments, said Pablo Tebas, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine.
Dr. Tebas was participating in a workshop on “HIV/AIDS Updates 2008” organised by Bangalore Baptist Hospital in association with ASHA Foundation.
Dr. Tebas said he was “impressed with the quality of treatment and care provided by doctors and nurses to HIV/AIDS infected persons in India.” But with social stigma still being one of the challenges to fight the disease, the best way was to integrate the treatment with other ailments, he said.
Glory Alexander of ASHA Foundation said tuberculosis, which was earlier considered a dreaded disease, was tackled in a better way now because the treatment was integrated with other diseases.
O.C. Abraham of Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, said that most drugs used to treat HIV/AIDS caused side effects such as severe anaemia, allergic rashes and liver problems to the patients. Jagadamba and Krishna Chivukula, spoke.
