Jude, Teenu emerge champions

KOCHI: Ernakulam’s Jude Antony Paul and Teenu Thomas won the boys’ and girls’ titles in the State sub-junior chess championship which concluded at the Cochin University here on Monday.

The top four finishers will represent Kerala in the forthcoming National championship. S. Anilkumar, Director, Public Relations, CUSAT, gave away the prizes.

Final standings: Boys: 1. Jude Antony Paul (Ekm, 7 pts from 8 rounds), 2. Sanjid Latheef (Kzd, 6.5), 3. Amir Asim (Kzd, 6.5), 4. Mohammed Fawas (Mlp, 6.5), 5. Vishnu Gopakumar (Ekm, 6).

Girls: 1. Teenu Thomas (Ekm, 4 pts from 5 rounds), 2. S. Amrutha (Klm, 4), 3. S. Nithya (Ksgd, 4), 4. S.L. Parvathy (Tvm, 3.5). — Principal Correspondent

Big win for Alappuzha

Alappuzha crushed Pathanamthitta by an innings and 32 runs in the South Zone under-19 inter-district cricket tournament at the Agriculture College ground, Thiruvananthapuram, on Monday. After bundling out Pathanamthitta for 160 runs in its first innings, Alappuzha piled up 306 for six.

Ashwin Sharma, once again, tormented the Pathanamthitta batsmen by picking up six wickets for 37 runs.

Except for Jubin Joy, who top-scored with 37, none of the Pathanamthitta batsmen offered resistance and the team was dismissed for 114. For this outright win, Alappuzha got five points.

The scores: Pathanamthitta 160 & 114 in 31.5 overs (Ashwin Sharma six for 37, Sabin S. Karnavar three for 41) lost to Alapuzha 306 for six in 70 overs (Balu Baiju 74, Mithun 61, Sabin S. Karnavar 59, Jubin Joy four for 99).

Kannur triumphs

Thiruvananthapuram men and Kannur women won the titles in the State senior handball championships which concluded at the Jimmy George indoor stadium here on Monday.

Thiruvananthapuram quelled a spirited challenge from Kottayam before winning 23-17 in the men’s final. Malappuram downed Kollam 12-8 to finish third. Kannur women overcame Kollam 13-9 to win the title. Thiruvananthapuram defeated Kozhikode 7-4 to finish third.

St. Xavier’s posts win

St. Xavier’s College (Aluva) recorded its second straight win in the women’s section of the Champions Trophy basketball tournament at Thrissur on Monday. St. Xavier’s scored an easy 72-46 win over Sports Hostel (Kollam). M.D. Lisha top-scored for the winner with 30 points, while Pravisha chipped in with 14 points. Smija Paulose top-scored for Sports Hostel with 14 points. On Sunday, St. Xavier’s defeated Assumption College (Changanassery) 39-29.

Lawrence basketball

The 18th P.L. Lawrence Trophy inter-School basketball tournament for boys and girls, organised by the Fort Kochi YMCA, will be held at the YMCA courts in Kochi from October 15 to 19. For entries and other details, contact the YMCA office (ph: 2215288 or 2216090).

MGU cricket

The Mahatma Gandhi University North Zone inter-collegiate cricket championship scheduled to begin at Kalamassery and Kothamangalam on Sept. 17, has been postponed. Fresh dates will be announced later, said Edwin Joseph, the MGU convener for North Zone.

TDCA u-16 cricket

The Thiruvananthapuram district cricket association (TDCA) will conduct an under-16 inter-school cricket tournament from September 25. Interested schools should contact Santosh Mathew (9387800471), said a release from the TDCA.
