BANGALORE: Minister for Public Works C.M. Udasi on Monday laid the foundation stone for an Engineering Bhavan of the Karnataka Engineering Service Association near K.R. Circle here. The bhavan would be constructed at a cost of Rs. 5 crore. It will have an indoor stadium, an auditorium, a meeting hall, a training centre and a library.

At the function organised to mark the birth celebrations of Bharat Ratna M. Visvesvaraya, Mr. Udasi said the Government had decided to organise a training programme for junior engineers of the Public Works Department to enhance their skills in project design and management.

He said the cadre and recruitment rules would be amended to give time-bound promotions to junior engineers whose total strength in the PWD, Water Resources, Panchayat Raj and Rural Development and Urban Development departments is 4,500. Minister for Minor Irrigation Govind Karjol said the newly recruited engineers must spend their first five years of service in office-related works to obtain knowledge about administration, accounting, management of projects, and plan and non-plan expenditure. Most of the engineers do not have basic knowledge of the State administration and departmental work, he said. Karnataka Engineering Service Association Honorary President Shivananda Hoogar and President B. Pithambaraswamy were present.
