Help desks for women, children at police stations
Special Correspondent
Bangalore: Police stations across Karnataka will soon have help desks for the exclusive use of women and children. Speaking at a consultation on ‘Right to Education and Out-of-School Children’ here on Monday, D.V. Guruprasad, Additional Director-General of Police, said that these help desks would be set up in coordination with non-governmental organisations. Issues related to women and children were seen as a last priority by many police personnel and the department was trying to overcome this mindset, he said. Around 7,000 police personnel had undergone training with the ‘Gender Sensitisation and People-Friendly Police Project’ of Karnataka and this was being made an integral part of the curriculum, he said.
Shantha Sinha, Chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, said that the Right to Education Bill (2005), soon to be tabled in Parliament, fails to identify the rights of children aged between zero to six and 14 to18.
She said this needed to be changed.
