MDMK to support bandh

Madurai Bureau

MADURAI: The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) will support the State-wide bandh call on September 16 announced by the traders to protest against frequent load shedding.

According to a press release, party general secretary Vaiko said that the load shedding had affected all sections of the society. Petrol and diesel prices and essential commodities had touched an all time high in the recent past.

The bandh called by the traders’ is justifiable and the MDMK would support it in the larger public interest which would pave way for the government to act in the right direction.

He appealed to the public to cooperate for the success of the stir.

Chamber says ‘no’

The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has said that it would not participate in the one-day traders’ bandh called ‘unilaterally by a Chennai-based association’ to protest load shedding on Tuesday.

Chamber president S.Rethinavelu said that the power situation caused untold hardships to public and industry.

However, with the wind power generation picking up, the power situation had improved to some extent.

He said that a bandh would not result in any improvement in the situation. Besides, with festivals such as Ramzan, Deepavali, and Saraswathi puja fast approaching, traders would reject any bandh call as it would only aggravate their problems, he said.
