Tributes paid

TIRUCHI: Glowing tributes were paid to late ‘Palani’ M. Subramania Pillai, a Mridangam and Kanjira wizard, whose centenary is being celebrated this year by the Sri Nandrudayan Sangeetha Samajam here. The Samajam has dedicated this year’s Vinayaka Chathurthi festival from September 4-15 to the maestro who was devoted to the festival. According to V. Ganapathi, a member of Samajam’s organising committee, the late Pillai was a regular to the Samajam’s Chathurthi festival in the 1940s and 50s accompanying Madurai Mani Iyer, the Alathoor Brothers and so on. Clarinet maestro A. K. C. Natarajansaid that the late Pillai was a multi-talented percussionist, who possessed extraordinary brilliance in thala and layam and was a pioneer in promoting team spirit among the contemporary musicians. Pillai was trained by his father Palani M. Muthiah His playing of the kanjira along with mridangam wizard Palghat Mani Iyer had embellished many concerts.
