Balapur Ganesh laddu fetches 5.07 lakhs

HYDERABAD: The stage was set and the mood was electrifying at the annual Balapur Ganesh Laddu auction on the city fringes here on Sunday. The ‘laddu’ auction this year fetched Balapur Ganesh Utsav Samithi Rs. 5.07 lakh as against Rs. 4.15 lakh last year.

Local resident and farmer, K. Mohan Reddy, who was incidentally the first successful bidder of the ‘laddu’ auction ever since it began in 1994, bagged ‘laddu’ for the fifth time this year as well.

“In 1994, I bagged the ‘laddu’ for Rs. 450 and this year it was for Rs. 5.07 lakh. I will continue to take part in future as well,” said an overwhelmed Reddy after winning the auction.

It is a belief among bidders that the successful one would be blessed with health and prosperity. The auction amount will be spent on conducting several welfare and developmental activities in Balapur village.

Earlier, in the day, people gathered in large numbers on the roof tops and occupied every bit of space available on the streets to witness the auction conducted by Balapur Ganesh Utsav Samithi President V. Laxma Reddy.

The auction started with an initial bid of Rs. 1,116 at around 9.30 a.m. and soon went up to Rs. 10,000. The moment the bidding price crossed the previous year’s Rs. 4.15 lakh rupees mark, there was a huge cheer from the crowd. The auction continued for over 25 minutes after K. Mohan Reddy was declared the successful bidder for Rs. 5.07 lakh.

Meanwhile, Badangpet Ganesh Utsav Samithi’s ‘laddu’ auction was said to have been won by a local resident, Goverdhan Reddy, for Rs. 7.02 lakh as against Rs. 6.50 lakh last year while the Pahadi Shareef Ganesh Utsav Samithi ‘laddu’ auction fetched Rs. 36,000.
