IEDs similar to those used in Ahmedabad
Devesh K. Pandey
NEW DELHI: The improvised explosive devices (IEDs) used in the Delhi serial blasts were similar to those used in the recent explosions in Jaipur, Bangalore and Ahmedabad, indicating the involvement of the same group. The bombs were planted at busy market places and triggered during peak hour to cause maximum casualty.
According to sources, the bombs also resembled the ones found in Surat. Readily available clocks were used as timer devices to synchronise them. “From the pattern of the blasts it appears that the same group is involved in these explosions,” said a senior police officer, adding that two of the bombs were of low intensity.
A common observation of the eyewitnesses of all the blasts was that they heard a loud explosion that was followed by a thick cloud of smoke. “The intensity and impact of the blasts suggests that the bombs perhaps were configured using ammonium nitrate,” said the police officer, adding that the contents of three defused bombs were being examined.
Preliminary investigations have indicated that the terrorists planted the bombs just a few minutes before they exploded.
The police have come across an eyewitness who claimed to have seen two persons planting a bomb in Connaught Place. The suspects had come in an autorickshaw.
