ASCA snooker from Sept. 15

Chennai: The Andhra Social and Cultural Association will conduct the Alliance Group-ASCA all-India invitation snooker tournament from September 15 to 21.

The tournament, with a winner’s purse of Rs.130,000, will feature some of India’s finest snooker talent.

“Between all of us, we have 21 World titles (billiards and snooker),” said five-time World professional billiards champion Geet Sethi, speaking at a press conference, on Friday.

Apart from Sethi, the other marquee names at the event include current IBSF World billiards champion Pankaj Advani, Ashok Shandilya, Rupesh Shah, Alok Kumar and Devendra Joshi.

The tournament begins with a best of five frame round-robin league stage, with eight groups of four players each. The top two in each group will progress to the knock-out stage.

The pre-quarterfinals and quarterfinals will be played on the best of seven frames, the semifinals on best of nine, and the final on September 21 on best of 11 frames.

IOB, ONGC score

IOB and ONGC (Dehradun) recorded victories over SDAT (Chennai) and Southern Railway respectively on the second day of the Aircel all-India volleyball tournament at Karaikal on Thursday.

The results: Men: ONGC (Dehradun) bt Southern Railway 25-18, 25-21, 17-25, 25-20; IOB (Chennai) bt SDAT 25-20, 25-22, 25-21.

Women: South Central Railway bt JBAS 25-6, 25-23, 25-13; Dr. Sivanthi Club bt SDAT (Chennai) 25-13, 26-24, 25-11.

Brace by Freddy

Freddy scored a brace in the 55th and 65th minutes as host Loyola College defeated Jeppiar Engineering College 2-0 in the CFA-S. Nagalingam Nadar Memorial inter-Collegiate football tournament.

SRM University beat Hindustan University 3-1. Suresh (43rd and 70th) and K. Venkatesan (60th) netted for SRM, while Soman scored for Hindustan in the 30th minute.

Prabhu scalps five

Prabhu’s spell of five for nine enabled Force 1 CC defeat United Stars by 19 runs in the final of the PEEPEE-Seven Stars Cricket Association Twenty20 tournament, here recently.

The scores: Final: Force 1 CC 101 in 19.1 overs (Thalaivan 35, Syed five for 21) bt United Stars 82 in 18 overs (G. Vignesh 26, M.P. Rajesh 25, Prabhu five for nine).

Sports meet

The Kumararani Meena Muthiah College of Arts and Science College will conduct the annual inter-Collegiate cricket, volleyball, kho-kho and inter-School table tennis tournaments from September 15 to 20 at the KRMMC ground.

Pradeepan shines

A.C. Pradeepan scored 84 as Kancheepuram made 268 in the first innings on the first day of its quarterfinal encounter against Vellore in the TNC u-22 inter-district cricket tournament, at Vellore on Friday.

The scores: Kancheepuram 268 in 79 overs (A.C. Pradeepan 84, S. Ashwin 62) vs. Vellore 19 for one.
