PIL filed against municipal corporation

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: B. Ashok Kumar, an advocate from Ajit Singh Nagar, filed public interest litigation (PIL) in the third metropolitan magistrate court seeking the removal of dumping yard from Ajit Singh Nagar, a residential area. Admitting the PIL on Friday, the Magistrate Ch. Rajagopal issued summons to the four respondents – Commissioner of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), Chief Medical Officer of the VMC, Environmental Engineer of the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board and the Managing Director of Sriram Energy Systems – and adjourned the case for November 21.

In his petition, Mr. Kumar said that though the capacity of the dumping yard was only 200 tonnes of garbage a day, the VMC was dumping 500 tonnes of garbage daily. The pollution, fume and foul smell emanating from the garbage was creating a lot of inconvenience to the public, particularly the residents of Vambay Colony, Devi Nagar, Santhi Nagar and Payakapuram, besides Ajit Singh Nagar.
