NEW DELHI: As a step towards putting the party in election mode and taking stock of the political situation, an extended meeting of the Congress Working Committee will be held here on Saturday. Besides CWC members, the Congress leadership has invited State Congress chiefs, Legislature Party leaders, party secretaries and special invitees for the meeting, which will also discuss the preparations to Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Mizoram and Rajasthan due later this year. Jammu & Kashmir elections are also due to be held by January next. This is also the first formal party meeting after India secured the NSG waiver and Congress leaders are expected to express their views on the successful completion of the process. Many are of the view that the civil nuclear agreement should be one of the major poll planks for addressing the country’s energy needs. The Congress leadership will also hear views of party leaders on forging alliances. The party has already announced an agreement with the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh. The meeting is also expected to discuss the developments in Bihar, Orissa and also the impact of price rise. The Congress has been in the forefront of opposition in Orissa demanding that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik step down in the light of violence against Christians.
