KANCHEEPURAM: Collector Santosh K. Misra has called upon members of the Village Poverty Reduction Committees to encourage local people to take up livelihood activities under the ‘vaazhnthukattuvom’ project, other than agricultural operations.

While inspecting the progress of the project at two panchayats in Madurantakam panchayat union recently, he suggested that local people take up different types of economic activity so that each family could generate sufficient income.

At Nelvoy panchayat, he was informed that Rs. 2.60 lakh had been disbursed to 13 persons for purchasing cattle, running mini-restaurant and retailing domestic products.

At Mangalam panchayat, the VPRC members told Mr. Misra that a sum of Rs.2. 45 lakh had been released to people with disabilities and below-poverty-line families for taking up pottery work, fish product sales, purchase of tailoring machine, setting up of coin-box telephone booth apart from purchasing of cattle.

While a total of 238 persons have been identified as eligible persons for assistance under the project at Nelvoy, 277 persons have been short-listed at Mangalam panchayat, according to a release.
