‘Generate power from poultry waste’

Staff Reporter

NAMAKKAL: Collector U. Sagayam called upon officials to promote awareness among people on generating electricity from poultry waste.

Participating in the Rajiv Gandhi Renewable Energy Day celebrations held here recently, he pointed out that the district has more than one lakh poultry birds.

The waste from the poultry units could be utilised to generate electricity.

Efforts

People and the industrial community should work together and efforts should be made to generate electricity from poultry waste.

The country is looking for more alternative sources of energy to minimise pollution levels, he added.

More people particularly from the rural areas should come forward to establish biogas units.

The use of solar powered street lights in the villages in the district should also be promoted, he said.

Tapping renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and bio-gas would address the country’s energy needs.

The use of such sources would bring down the pollution levels and ensure better living conditions for the people. It would also reduce the country’s dependence on the conventional sources such as coal and petroleum products, he added.

Later, the Collector participated in the special mass contact programme in Bommasamudram village near here.

The district administration had taken concerted efforts to remove encroachments on water spreads and water carrying channels. People should co-operate with the administration to harvest rainwater effectively.

He disbursed Rs. 5.45 lakh as welfare assistance to 152 beneficiaries under various schemes.

Mahalir Thittam Project Officer Lokeshwari, District Supply Officer Raveendran, District Disabled Rehabilitation Officer Imthias Ahamed, District Backward Class Welfare officer Krishnasamy and senior officials were also present.
