Manoj through to final

Y.B. Sarangi

BATHINDA: Manoj Kumar, who got a second lease of life, utilised it to stay in contention for the light welterweight title at the 55th National boxing championship at the Giani Zail Singh Stadium here on Thursday.

Railways’ Manoj, who got walkover against Som Bahadur Pun of Services in the replay of his quarterfinal bout, defeated S.B. Tamang of Assam Rifles 12-4 in the semifinals.

Banking on his powerful straight punches, Manoj, an Asian Championship bronze medallist, took an early lead and maintained it throughout the clash.

Cautious start

Initially, the Railway boxer was a little cautious and led by a slender lone point in the first round and 3-1 in the second. In the third round Manoj warded off Tamang’s offensive moves to stay ahead at 6-3.

The Assam Rifles boxer became impatient in the last round and threw some wild punches in a desperate bid to catch up. However, Tamang’s untidy technique cost him dearly as he was warned twice for bending and conceded four penalty points.

In the final, the Railways boxer will meet Meghalaya’s Vijay Thapa, who beat S. Prem Kumar of Karnataka 9-8.

Tight contest

In a keenly-contested lightweight bout, Rakesh Kalaskar of Services edged past Vikash Malik of the Railways 13-8.

The contest was evenly poised till the third round with the scores tied 8-8. Kalaskar’s experience prevailed in the end.

Defending welterweight champion Dilbagh Singh defeated Jagat of All India Police with a convincing margin of 23-3.
