One drowns as coracle capsizes

Staff Reporter

NAMAKKAL: One man drowned and another went missing when a coracle capsized in Cauvery near Chozha Siramani village in Paramathi Velur block in Namakkal district on Thursday morning.

The coracle was transporting people from Chozha Siramani to Pasur village in Erode district, when the accident took place.

Overloading was said to be the reason.

The coracle, built to carry six to seven persons, reportedly had 15 persons, including six women, two mopeds, one motorcycle and a bicycle on board.

Somasundaram (55), a resident of Chozha Siramani drowned, while 13 others swam to safety. The locals fished out the body of Somasundaram. Search is on for Chinnathambi.
