Jaffer, Maaruthi hit hundreds

Special Correspondent

Chennai: Mumbai XI’s Wasim Jaffer and V. Maaruthi Raghav of TNCA XI came up with centuries on the opening day of the all-India Buchi Babu invitation tournament quarterfinals here on Thursday.

Jaffer’s 148 (217b, 17x4, 1x6) and Rohit Sharma’s strokeful 90 (127b, 9x4, 2x6) were responsible for Mumbai XI reaching 333 in the first innings against Sourashtra at the Pachaiyappa’s ‘A’ ground. Ankit Chavan’s 73-ball 59 was a handy contribution for the Mumbai team which won the toss.

At the ICL-Guru Nanak ground, Combined Districts was dismissed for 240 by Karnataka XI.

Following a stuttering start after opting to bat, Combined Districts was rescued by a 101-run stand for the fifth wicket in 42 overs between S. Suresh Kumar (32) and V. Subramania Siva (62). E. Suresh (44) and M.K. Sivakumar (35) rallied down the order.

Then, Districts paceman R. Sutheesh struck two quick blows to reduce the Karnataka side to 22 for two at stumps.

TNCA XI reached a creditable 364 for seven in the allotted 90 overs against Baroda XI at the CPT-IP ground. V. Maaruthi Raghav (102, 147b, 7x4) played himself in and then consolidated. N. Einstein (97, 198b, 7x4, 1x6) came up with a valuable contribution.

Century partnerships

Importantly, the side was able to string together partnerships after electing to bat. Einstein and R. Prasanna (72, 120b, 10x4, 1x6) put on 115 runs for the third wicket in 31.3 overs. Maaruthi and Prasanna added 143 runs for the fourth wicket in 38.2 overs.

Paceman S.M. Shoiab claimed four wickets as Hyderabad XI bowled out Gujarat XI for 331 at the SRMC (turf) ground. Digant Popat, who top-scored with 79 (155b, 5x4), and Sunny Patel (62, 85b, 6x4) raised 103 for the fourth wicket in 30.4 overs. Timil Patel made a valuable 65 (91b, 3x4). Earlier, Gujarat chose to bat.

The scores: Mumbai XI 333 in 89.1 overs (Wasim Jaffer 148, Rohit Sharma 90, Ankit Chavan 59) vs. Sourashtra.

Combined Districts 240 in 88.1 overs (V. Subramania Siva 62, E. Suresh 44) vs. Karnataka XI 22 for two in seven overs.
