Leaders extend Onam greetings to people

CHENNAI: Prominent personalities, led by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, have greeted people on the occasion of Onam.

In a statement here on Thursday, Mr. Barnala said: “Let Onam, the annual harvest festival, rekindle the spirit of unity and brotherhood and promote peace and communal harmony.”

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said his government had been honouring the sentiments of Keralites by declaring a local holiday for Onam in Chennai, Kanyakumari, Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts for the last two years.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary, Jayalalithaa, said Onam was celebrated by all and the festival served to unite people of all classes and sects and promote secularism, she said in a release.

Vijayakant, founder-president of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, also extended greetings to the people.
