They demanded 10,000 from a person for sparing him from getting booked for “trimming a tree” Sting operations conducted to confirm complaint; constables held while allegedly receiving cash NEW DELHI: The Station House Officer of the Sarita Vihar police station and his two subordinates were arrested on Tuesday by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Delhi Government for allegedly demanding and accepting bribe from a person for sparing him from getting booked for “trimming a tree”. The accused were on Wednesday produced in the court of Special Judge A.S. Yadav who remanded them to 14 days’ judicial custody. The Anti-Corruption Branch recently received a complaint from Sopal, a transport operator from Sarita Vihar, that some police officers of the area were demanding money for not registering a case pertaining to trimming of a tree at the residence of his brother-in-law. The policemen had allegedly been demanding Rs.10,000 stating that trimming a tree was an offence for which the person could be booked. Finding merit in the complaint, the Anti-Corruption Branch decided to conduct a sting operation against the accused policemen. According to Additional Commissioner of Police N. Dilip Kumar, Head Constable Ram Dayal and Constable Dulli Chand were demanding money and during the conversation they also indicated that Rs.5,000 was to be given to the area SHO, Rajender Singh. In order to confirm the role of the SHO in the conspiracy, another sting operation was conducted in which the SHO assured that the person concerned would not be harassed. “Even after bringing it to his knowledge that there was a demand for money from his lower subordinates and that a share had also been arranged for the SHO, the officer did not act against them,” said Dr. Kumar. Subsequently a trap was laid under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police I.D. Shukla and Ram Dayal and Dulli Chand were arrested while allegedly receiving Rs.2,500 in cash, following which the SHO was also arrested and booked under relevant provisions of the law. The Anti-Corruption Branch has arrested a dozen Delhi police officers and personnel this year so far.
