English course coverage widened

NAGERCOIL: The ‘Hello English’ course launched under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan to improve language skills of government school students will be extended to high and higher secondary schools in Kanyakumari district.
According to sources, the course will cover more than 680 government and aided schools in the district. The Government has allotted Rs 40 lakh for the purchase of television sets and DVD players for this audio-visual course.
There are 413 primary schools, 147 middle schools, 120 high schools and 122 higher secondary schools in the district. Students of standards I to V will be covered in the first phase.
Ten compact discs will be distributed to each school. The Government had already provided Rs. 5,000 each to primary schools and Rs. 7,000 each to middle schools, officials said. Similar amounts would be sanctioned for high and higher secondary schools.
Under the pilot programme, English songs, cartoons and speeches made by experts in English will be shown and explained to students. The management of each aided school will pay a sum of Rs 7,225 as contribution for the successful implementation of the scheme.
The course will be conducted for one period in the morning or evening session.
