Corrections and clarifications

A sentence in the seventh paragraph of a report “Nuclear deal will promote closer ties, says U.S. Ambassador Mulford” (September 10, 2008) was “The U.S. Ambassador concurred with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s observation on Monday that he would like to wait for the 123 Agreement before making bilateral agreements with other countries.” It should have been “to wait for the signing of the Agreement”.

The first paragraph of a report “Indo-German science centre inaugurated” (September 10, 2008) was “Union Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal and his German counterpart, Annette Schavan, inaugurated an Indo-German Science and Technology Centre here on Tuesday.” Dr. Annette Schavan is the German Federal Minister of Education and Research.

The text of a report “HCL chief explains firm’s vision to employees” (Chennai city, September 10, 2008, page 2) gave the name of the CEO, HCL Technologies, as Vineet Nayar, while the caption of the accompanying photograph said Vineet Nanda. The detail in the text is right.

A sentence in the first paragraph of a report “Cess on diesel cars on anvil” (“Business” page, September 9, 2008) was “The proposals also talk of charging bulk users other than Railways and State transport corporations Rs. 57 a litre more for the supply of diesel.” The word “more” was an error.

The caption of the accompanying Reuters photograph in a report “EU accepts Russia’s stand on Georgia” (September 9, 2008) was “Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev (left) with his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy (right) in Moscow in Moscow on Monday. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso looks on.” The unedited caption was “France’s President Nicolas Sarkozy (right), Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev (left) and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso meet at a presidential residence outside Moscow [on] September 8, 2008. Sarkozy arrived in Russia on Monday to seek a lasting peace deal for Georgia that will persuade Russia to pull its troops out of positions deep inside the ex-Soviet state.”
