In May, 82 buildings were issued demolition notice

CHENNAI: More than 30 buildings have been listed for demolition and immediate action by the Chennai Corporation and the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.

In the wake of the fire accident in T. Nagar, debates about laxity in enforcement of building rules and court observations, the Chennai Corporation and the CMDA decided to list “fit cases” for demolition.

The survey undertaken includes only buildings in prominent places and whose construction started after July 27, 2007.

The recent government ordinance prevented demolition of buildings that have been completed before July 27, 2007.

About 17 of the identified buildings for demolition are in violation of Chennai Corporation planning permission and fall under Corporation jurisdiction.

The remaining are in violation of the CMDA planning permission and is being reviewed by the CMDA.

A coordination meeting between the CMDA and the Chennai Corporation was held on Tuesday and the process has been initiated.

In May 2008, a total of 56 out of the 84 buildings under the CMDA jurisdiction and 26 out of the 679 buildings under the Corporation jurisdiction were issued demolition notice. All these buildings commenced construction after July 27, 2007.

In all, including municipalities, town panchayats and panchayat unions within the Chennai Metropolitan area, out of the 4,856 buildings surveyed, 1,842 buildings were issued demolition notice but actual demolition was not taken up.
