KOLKATA: Holder Mohun Bagan moved closer to retaining the premier division title of the Calcutta Football League beating George Telegraph SC 1-0 in its penultimate league encounter on Tuesday. Brazilian striker Jose Barreto helped Bagan ensure three points scoring in the 30th minute. This put Bagan firmly on top of the table with 30 points from 13 matches. Bagan’s win was spoilt by an unsavoury incident in injury time when it’s forward Ishfaq Ahmed was given marching orders for misbehaving with the referee. Bagan needs a draw against East Bengal in its last league encounter on Friday to ensure the title. East Bengal (24 points from 13 matches), which struggled with its form all through the tournament, is already out of the title race. Mohammedan Sporting, which has 24 points from 12 matches, stands a chance of claiming the title, but only if Bagan loses to East Bengal and Sporting wins its next two matches by handsome margins. — Principal Correspondent
