Baljeet stuns Varghese Johnson; four disqualified

Y.B. Sarangi

BATHINDA: Super heavyweight boxer Varghese Johnson’s campaign in the 55th National boxing championship ended on a disappointing note after being stunned by Chandigarh’s Baljeet in the pre-quarterfinals at the Giani Zail Singh Stadium here on Tuesday.

Baljeet pounded the Services man to win 17-11. Earlier, Olympian Diwakar Prasad survived a scare before making it to the quarterfinals of the featherweight category.

Diwakar was in the danger of being knocked out even after leading 15-0 against Punjab’s Mahmood Khan. A moment of carelessness almost spelt the Railway boxer’s doom as a powerful punch from Khan in the third round left Diwakar totally shaken up. However, he managed to keep his rival at bay to win 15-4.

Rules flouted

Meanwhile, four Jharkhand boxers — G. Sathyaraju (64kg), Saubam Santosh (54kg), K.T.T. Singh (60kg) and Mehar Singh (+91 kg) — were found “ineligible” to take part for flouting the borrowing of players’ rule.

After receiving complaints from Railways and Chandigarh a seven-member panel decided to disqualify the boxers and declare their bouts null and void.

They had not sought NOCs from Services to represent Jharkhand, according to the IBF Vice-President Asit Banerjee.
