Quarterfinalists spotted

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Deepak Sharma’s 100 went in vain for Assam on a day the quarterfinal line-up of the Buchi Babu invitation cricket tournament was decided, after the third and final round of the league phase concluded here on Tuesday.

Sharma ploughed a lone furrow, but his 152-ball effort (16x4, 1x6) couldn’t deny Baroda a convincing 178-run win and a spot in the knockout phase. Swapnil Singh claimed three wickets for Baroda, which qualified behind Hyderabad from Group ‘C’.

Hyderabad secured a 48-run win against Rajasthan. Mohd. Abdul Kader bagged four wickets, while Ashwin Yadav picked up three. Ashok Menaria top-scored for Rajasthan with 96 (125b, 11x4, 1x6).

Easy for TNCA XI

Gujarat was one of only two sides among the eight that advanced despite losing a third-round match. TNCA XI topped Group ‘D’, overhauling Gujarat’s score of 237 with ease. Ra. Aravind (57, 98b, 9x4) and M. Vijay (89, 149b, 6x4, 3x6) shared an opening stand of 116, before R. Prasanna (40 n.o.) and Dinesh Karthik (38 n.o.) sealed the eight-wicket win.

Saurashtra went down to Combined Districts, but qualified second in Group ‘B’. Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 50 (157b, 4x4) brought Saurashtra to within 30 runs of group topper Districts in a low-scoring encounter. V. Rajnikant, M.K. Sivakumar, and C. Suresh split six wickets for Districts.

Amit stars

Amit Verma’s unbeaten 53 (51b, 7x4) guided Karnataka past Tripura for four points, to finish behind Mumbai in Group ‘A’. Wasim Jaffer and Vinayak Mane made half-centuries to help Mumbai post a five-wicket win over Kerala.

The match between Himachal Pradesh and Vidarbha was washed out without a ball being bowled, resulting in the sides gaining a point each.

Quarterfinal fixtures (to be played on Sept. 11-12): Mumbai v Saurashtra (Pachaiyappas ‘A’); Combined Districts v Karnataka (ICL Guru Nanak); Hyderabad v Gujarat (SRMC Turf); TNCA XI v Baroda (CPT-IP).
