Puducherry
PUDUCHERRY: Union Minister of State for Planning and Parliamentary Affairs V. Narayanasamy on Tuesday urged the territorial government to invoke Goondas Act in Puducherry for maintaining law and order. He told reporters here that he had pointed out on several occasions that violence and crimes such as murder and dacoity were on the rise in the Union Territory and the prevailing situation, people could not live safely. He had apprised the Union Minister of State for Home of the situation prevailing in Puducherry at the review meetings on law and order during his previous visits to Puducherry, he recalled. Several anti-social elements had migrated to Puducherry from Tamil Nadu and some of the wanted accused were arrested by the Tamil Nadu police, he said. Invoking the Goondas Act was essential for Puducherry as the government had to protect tourists visiting the Union Territory. Replying to a query, Mr. Narayanasamy said the demand made by leader of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam Vijayakant that the entire power generated by the thermal stations in Neyveli should be earmarked for Tamil Nadu was wrong. Though the Centre had to help Tamil Nadu overcome the power crisis, the Central Generating Station had the responsibility to distribute power to other needy States too, he said. Shortly before calling on Chief Minister V.Vaithilingam and discussing issues relating to the territorial government’s plea for additional funds to the tune of Rs.354 crore from the Centre, Mr.Narayanasamy said a Ministerial team would call on the Prime Minister, the Congress president, the Finance Minister, the Home Minister and the Deputy Chairman of the Finance Commission in four or five days and present a report seeking Central assistance. He promised to extend full cooperation to the Cabinet in this regard, he added. Mr. Narayanasamy clarified that his appeal to the Congress activists at a meeting held at the Pradesh Congress Committee office on Thursday was intended to strengthen the party in all the 30 Assembly segments in the Union Territory.
