East Bengal posts win

KOLKATA: East Bengal returned to form with a thumping 3-1 win over Peerless SC in a premier division match of the Calcutta Football League, here on Monday.

East Bengal, which is virtually out of the title race after losing its last match against Chirag United SC, seemed to brace itself for the upcoming derby clash against league leader Mohun Bagan with the win against Peerless.

Sunil Chhetri scored in the second minute to give East Bengal the right start. East Bengal doubled in the lead in the 53rd minute when Peerless defender Soumen Sarkar miscued a clearance into his own goal.

Alvito D’Cunha, making a comeback after a brief lay-off with injury, made it 3-0 for East Bengal in the 61st minute. Emmanuel Junior pulled one back for Peerless (3-1) by converting a 77th-minute penalty.

East Bengal remained in the third position with 24 points from 13 matches. — Principal Correspondent
