Corrections and clarifications

A sentence in the last paragraph of an article “Thirty words that saved the day” (“News Analysis”, September 8, 2008) was “… The NSG’s decision meets the criteria of ‘clean and conditional’ but it has done so by creating rights for both India and its critics within the NSG.” It should have been “clean and unconditional”.

The second paragraph of a report “Chinese Minister optimistic on ties” (September 8, 2008) had an abrupt reference to a “Mr. Mukherjee” in the second paragraph. It was an editing error. The unedited version was “The Chinese minister, who is visiting India for the first time, said earlier during his speech that he was advised by India’s External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to start his India visit with Kolkata. ‘I feel at home here,’ he said hours after his visit. Mr Mukherjee during his visit to former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu in a city hospital said that Mr Jiechi is a guest and he welcomed him.”

The last paragraph of a report “PPP puts Sharif in a bind” (“International” page, September 3, 2008) had a reference to “Rehman Malik, adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior”, leading to queries on whether he was a minister or an adviser. Nirupama Subramanian clarifies that his official designation is Advisor to the PM on Interior. But he functions as the Interior Minister.

The third paragraph of a report “Olympian to learn ancient art” (“Newscape” page, September 8, 2008) was “‘I have been wanting to learn Kalari ever since I saw it being taught back home in Canada, by Geethanjali Wolfgramm, a former of this institute, and decided to fly to India directly from Beijing,’ McGuire told The Hindu.” It should have been a “former student”.

In the reports “When the Kosi did the unexpected” (September 6, 2008) and “Indian engineers fighting against the fury of Kosi” (September 7, 2008), there was an erroneous statement that the Kosi river moved west, for the first time. The Kosi has moved eastward due to the breach in the eastern protective embankment upstream of the barrage in Nepal. Also, there was a general mix-up of the specific terms “dam”, “barrage”, “embankment” and “spur”. There is no dam across the Kosi either in India or in Nepal, but a large barrage built by India just inside Nepal.

It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
