Nets distributed

Staff Reporter

PUDUKOTTAI: As part of its rehabilitation programme for the benefit of tsunami-hit fishermen, the Canadian Red Cross Society has sanctioned 600 fishing nets of 10 coastal villages in the district, worth about Rs.20 lakh.

The Canadian Red Cross Society, in co-ordination with the Pudukottai district branch of the Red Cross Society, identified the fishermen in Muthukuda; Arasanagaripattinam; R. Pudupattinam; North Pudukudi; South Pudukudi; Adipattinam; Ammapattinam;Manamelkudi; Ponnagaram and Prathabiramanpattinam.

Speaking at a function held at Muthukuda village, about 80 km from here, on Saturday to mark the distribution of the nets, the Secretary of the Tamil Nadu State branch of the society, Shantha Diaz, traced the grounds that led to the selection of Pudukottai district by the Canadian Red Cross Society for extending this livelihood assistance under its Integrated Community Development Scheme.

The district branch of the society, she said, had been actively involved in the welfare of the children of fishermen by forming crèches for the past decade, one of the qualifying factors for the selection of the district for Tsunami relief programme.

She specifically appealed to the fishermen to take maximum advantage of the livelihood assistance and stabilise their economic status. With the tsunami having affected the lifestyle of the people of a large number of countries, the Indian government had refrained from accepting any monetary donation from other countries towards Tsunami relief package.

However, several foreign countries, including Canada, decided to route the assistance to India through the Red Cross Societies across the globe.

The Revenue Divisional Officer, Aranthangi, S. Visagan, spoke.
