NEW FACILITY: Finance Minister P. Chidambaram laying the foundation stone for a hospital at Managiri near Karaikudi on Sunday. KARAIKUDI: Promotion of public-private partnership is one of the best ways to provide excellent healthcare facilities to the needy, including poor, Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has said. Laying the foundation stone for Apollo Reach Hospital at Managiri, on the outskirts of Karaikudi on Sunday, he said that providing healthcare facilities was the responsibility of the government. But providing quality healthcare to a huge population was a huge task for any government. Public-private partnership would be a better way to ensure excellent healthcare for all, he said. Recalling the inroads made by Apollo hospital in extending quality healthcare, Mr. Chidambaram said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was among those who persuaded Prathap C. Reddy, its founder, to return from the west to serve Indians. During the last 25 years, he had not only established excellent hospitals in Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi and Madurai, but also planned to set up semi-urban and rural hospitals in various parts of the country. The proposed hospital at Karaikudi would play an important role in delivering quality service to the people of Sivaganga and nearby districts. The Central Government had announced tax holiday for setting up hospitals in tier II cities basically to create more ultra modern facilities for meeting the healthcare needs of people in semi-urban and rural areas. Preetha Reddy, Managing Director, Apollo hospitals, said Siddha and Ayurvedic systems of medicine might also get a boost here, as they could be provided to foreigners visiting Karaikudi. Earlier, Mr. Chidambaram honoured Nesamani alias Tamil Mani for donating his land for setting up the hospital.
