State indifferent to cowherd’s dream

Srinivas who took up studies after he was insulted for being an illiterate waits for State’s help to crack Civil Services

A. Srinivas

HYDERABAD: The State government has been sitting on a recommendation made in 2004 by the President for taking ‘appropriate action’ by the Chief Secretary following a representation by a cowherd Aduvangala Srinivas of Achampet mandal (Mahabubnagar district), either for financial help or a job.

Support sought

As a 24-year-old he had written to the President expressing his desire to pursue his dream of passing the civil services after starting study at the age of 17. Srinivas told The Hindu that he took up the study after a hotel manager in Nampally insulted him for affixing thumb impression after taking salary. If the government provides him either financial assistance or helps in securing a job he would be able to achieve his dream.

‘As I hold a BCom degree in distance mode of Andhra University, I can take up a job of doing accounts or office administration. I also know C language. If I get a good job I will try to repeat my attempt to appear for Civils’, Mr. Srinivas (28) says confidently. The Rashtrapathi Bhavan’s communication of March 4, 2004, followed a report in The Hindu dated April 7, 2003 (‘Low on resources, high on morale’) highlighting the young man’s toil to become a graduate in just eight years and aspire for more.

Determined

Srinivas recalls his failed attempt to appear for the Civil Services examination in 2005, after undergoing coaching in the Andhra Pradesh Study Circle.

0 ‘I failed in mental ability and tried again the next year without much success’.

‘I am unable to repeat the attempt, as I have to take care of the family by continuing in odd jobs in the hotel industry for the last 15 years since 1992. If the government comes forward with a gesture of either providing financial assistance or employment I can hope to realise the dream’. He remembers the way his father toiled as an agriculturist in Siddapur village, as also his family which belongs to a backward class community.
