Two children drown

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The immersion of Ganesh idols that commenced on Sunday marking the end of five days of the 12-day festival, turned tragic with two children getting drowned in a pond near their residence at B. N. Reddy Nagar in Kushaiguda.

Kishore (5) and Mohan Rao (9) went to the pond along with their friends to immerse an idol. But Kishore accidentally slipped and got drowned. Rao too died while trying to rescue Kishore, the police said.

Meanwhile, at Tank Bund, revellers sprinkling ‘gulal’ and dancing to the pulsating drumbeats participated in the immersion of idols. While processions from old city started after noon, those coming from Secunderabad and surrounding areas began after 8 p.m.

Cranes were arranged on Necklace Road and Upper Tank Bund for immersing idols. Police imposed traffic restrictions on Tank Bund and diverted traffic at Hotel Marriot, Necklace Road Rotary and Telugu Talli statue junction.
