Eyesore: Leftovers after the immersion of some Ganesh idols strewn on the beach in Visakhapatnam on Sunday. — VISAKHAPATNAM: Immersion of Ganesh idols in the sea took place at the Ramakrishna Beach on Sunday. Being the fifth day of Vinayaka Chavithi festivities the event that began at 4 p.m. went on till late on Sunday night. Till late in the evening around 200 idols were immersed without any untoward incident. Devotees brought idols of various sizes for immersion with fanfare. Centralising the event, police made arrangements for the event at the Ramakrishna Beach. About 150 meters of barricading was set up and vehicles that brought the idols were stopped there. The idols, brought in procession from various parts of the city, were taken into the sea by swimmers engaged by the police. Three-town circle inspector Ranga Raju said around 90 swimmers were deployed for the purpose. Lighting was arranged by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation. Medical officers, GVMC engineers and 108 ambulance were kept at hand. Traffic Circle Inspector K. Prabhakar oversaw traffic control in view of the heavy Sunday crowd on the Beach Road. All the processions were routed via Park Hotel side.
