Eight civic bodies in north Andhra in the red

Special Correspondent

Salaries not paid to staff due to poor collection of taxes

Visakhapatnam: Poor collection of taxes in majority of 11 municipalities in the Visakha Region, comprising the districts of Visakhapatnam,Vizianagaram and Srikakulam, has resulted in non-payment even salaries to the staff. According to sources in the Municipal Administration department, the employees in the municipalities of Itchapuram (Srikakulam district) and Bobbili (Vizianagaram district) had not been paid salaries for the last four months. Similarly the staff of Parvathipuram and Salur, both in Vizianagram district, had not received their salaries for the last three months. A month’s salary was due to employees of Anakapalli. Eight of the eleven municipalities in the region are apparently in red.

This sorry state of affairs could be attributed to poor collection of taxes and piling up of arrears.

The total demand of taxes (both arrears and current) was 29.69 crore in all the 11 municipalities. Vizianagaram district with four municipalities tops this list with Rs.14.87 crore demand. This was followed by Srikakulam district with a demand of Rs.9.39 crore in the five municipalities. The demand in Srikakulam municipality, which is a district headquarters town, alone was Rs.5.13 crore.

The collection during the month of July (current and arrears) in all the eleven municipalities of the Visakha Region was a mere Rs.1.99 crore. The collection of taxes in Itchapuram municipality where staff members had not been paid their salaries for the last four months, was Rs. 8.61 lakh against a demand of Rs.90.35 lakh for the month of July.

The progressive collection up to July was just Rs.6.93 crore.
