The population of the Chennai Metropolitan Area will be about 125 lakh by 2026. Demand for housing will vary from 38,000 to 62,000 units annually and the total demand by 2026 is estimated to be 12.37 lakh. Housing needs of economically weaker sections and low income groups have been addressed through measures such as 10 per cent reservation on housing projects spread over a hectare and allowing additional FSI of 0.25 in cases where dwelling units do not exceed 45 sq.m. in floor area.
