KOLKATA: National under-11 champion Girish Koushik of Karnataka pocketed wins in successive rounds before marching to sole lead after the penultimate round of The Telegraph Schools’ chess tournament, here on Sunday. Koushik, who was in the second spot after playing out a draw in the sixth round on Friday, posted two impressive wins on a day that had two rounds played. In the eight round, he crushed overnight leader Sayantan Das and won a long ending against Chandrashish Majumdar in the ninth before clearing a one point lead over his second-placed opponents. Third seed Hemant Sharma of Delhi moved to the joint second spot after defeating Ankit Singh of Jharkhand in another long game. Another Delhi player, Aditya Chakraborty, also moved into the second spot, which is shared by five players including top seed Satyajit Kundu and Sayantan. Important results: Ninth round: Chandrashish Majumdar 7 lost to Girish Koushik 8.5; Satyajit Kundu 7.5 drew with Sayantan Das 7.5; Hemant Sharma 7.5 bt Ankit Singh 6.5; Aditya Chakraborty 7.5 bt Prantik Roy 6.5; Pallabi Roy 6.5 lost to Dhee Shankar 7.5; Samrat Ghorai 7 drew with Saikat Mullick 7; Saikat Dutta 6.5 lost to Diptayan Ghosh 7; Sayan Majumdar 6.5 drew with Prince Bajaj 6.5. — Principal Correspondent
