Staff Reporter

Well done: R. Balachandran, former Professor of English, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, honouring a former teacher A. Loganathan, in Pudukottai on Friday.

PUDUKOTTAI: A group of five teachers were awarded a prize and a citation in honour of their selfless services in the cause of the student community and development of education, as part of the Teacher’s Day celebrations here recently.

The teachers were chosen based on their achievements in the academic uplift of students, according to the Managing Trustee of the Kavirasan Trust, K. Shanmuganathan and the president of Junior Chamber of Pudukottai Central, K. Murugabarathi, who jointly organised the function.

Those honoured were four former teachers of Government schools, A. Loganathan; G. Krishnaswamy; V. Gowri and a retired professor of the H.H. The Rajah’s College, S. Navaneethan; and the Physical Education Teacher of Valluvar Aided Middle School, Pon. Velayutham.

In his felicitations, Mr. Murugabarathi recalled the services rendered by Mr. Loganathan in sparing no efforts to get the Government High School upgraded into a higher secondary school. Mr. Loganathan had mobilised desk and other furniture not only through public donation, but also contributed his might by making the furniture after felling the coconut trees in his grove.

Mr. Krishnaswamy and Ms. Gowri played a key role in improving the students’ talent and also guiding them to take up career opportunities, while Mr. Navaneethan had ably guided students to take up Ph.D. degree. Mr. Velayutham did a follow-up of students of all the schools in and around Kuzhipirai who were proficient in sports and encouraged them to win several competitions at the State-level.

Former Head of Department of English, Manomaniam Sundaranar University, R. Balachandran, who honoured the teachers, underlined the role of teachers in shaping the future citizens of the country.

The services rendered by these teachers would be a source of inspiration to the teaching community, he said.
