Sub-contracting partnership exchange soon

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: A sub-contracting partnership exchange (SPX) to help auto component makers in Chennai to talk to players worldwide will soon be ready, according to United Nations Industrial Development Organisation expert James Daniel Paul.

As a first step, a database of 153 auto component manufacturers based at Ambattur is being prepared with inputs from various companies.

The completed database will contain information about the company’s turnover and other business details and also its capabilities and the machines it sells.

“It will provide all information required by any international auto manufacturer who is looking at sub-contracting the production of some of his components,” Dr. Paul says. The SPX, part of the UNIDO’s Consolidated Project of SME Development in India, will also look at auto component industries in Pune and the National Capital Region and include 353 companies from all three areas. “When we presented the idea with some components of the database to institutions in Italy and France, they were excited. Most of them were dealing with only Tier-I companies. Dealing with Tier-II and Tier-III companies will give them better margins,” Dr. Paul says.

Following the UNIDO’s presentation, a delegation from France visited India recently and was introduced to Tier-II and Tier-III companies in Chennai. A meeting was organised jointly by the UNIDO and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to present the views of representatives from both countries. At the end of the interaction, Christophe Collette, general manager, Rhone Alpes automotive cluster, said he looked forward to tie-ups with Indian manufacturers.
