Great expectations

Megastar Chiranjeevi, with his entry into politics, has created ripples in State politics. In the past also, film stars like MGR and NTR were successful in politics. Hope Chiru’s party will be progressive and democratic, but not celebrity- centred. The name of his party, Praja Rajyam, means people’s nation. Hope the party strives to usher in selfless and dedicative politics and works for the development of economically backward sections, including farmers and artisans.

Pensioners too need HRA

Government employees are paid basic pay, DA and HRA. But, pensioners are paid only some basic pay and DA.

They are denied HRA. May be, the government is of the opinion that by the time an employee retires, he or she will have an own house.

But, it is not true in several cases.

Notwithstanding the advanced age, they are compelled to spend huge amounts from their paltry pension towards medical expenses and house rent. As the government is implementing so many welfare schemes, it should show some benevolence towards the aged pensioners and grant HRA.

No LPG for meal scheme

Under the mid-day meal scheme, the government has supplied gas stoves to many elementary schools in Nellore district and promised to sanction nearly 500 gas connections. But, this has not happened.

The government seems to have made a proposal for sanction of connections to gas companies, but the connections have not been sanctioned.

Consequently, those managing the mid-deal meal scheme are facing hardship during rainy season due to non-availability of fuel. What is the use of gas stoves without connections?

Worth taking up ‘vidyayagnam’

It is certainly nice of MLCs to take up the most neglected topic of school education in the State for discussion, and express their concern over the neglect of the same. In this context, one MLC has suggested to the government to take up ‘vidyayagnam’ on the lines of Jalayagnam by involving the corporate sector to improve the standards in government schools.

If the government is sincere in its efforts to tone up the standards of school education, it should dispense with the practise of entrusting duties such as enumeration and other election-related work to teachers.

The teachers should also be exempted from mid-day meal scheme duties.

Side middle berth is inconvenient

I always prefer to travel by Machilpatnam-Secunderabad express by reserving a side lower birth for my comfort.

This berth is also preferred by the aged, as they do not get good sleep and have to go to toilet often.

The addition of one more berth is causing a lot inconvenience and discomfort to passengers. The authorities should remove the side middle berths already fixed in trains and desist from doing so in other trains.
