Importance of breastfeeding stressed
Staff Reporter
Tiruvannamalai: Breastfeeding was vital to developing immunity in infants, Collector M. Rajendran said, presiding over a world breastfeeding week festival held here on Saturday.
The average weight of the Indian male and female child was below normal. This was because of mothers not feeding their babies, which, in turn, created nutrient deficiency, he said. When compared to Aavin milk and buffalo milk, mother’s milk had less fat and more essential nutrients. This made breast feeding vital to developing immunity and intelligence in children, Mr. Rajendran said. Iron deficiency was prevalent among teenage girls. To avoid this, girls need to consume more vegetables, he said. Mr. Rajendran distributed certificates to girls who had completed vocational training and those who took part in oratorical and poetry competitions. He also gave prize to winners of healthy baby contest. S. Backiyanathan, P.O., Integrated Child Development Scheme, welcomed the gathering. Deputy Director (Health Services) Bavani Umadevi spoke.
