SRM University wins trophy

Chennai: SRM University retained the trophy in the sixth State-level Kamarajar volleyball tournament jointly conducted by the Vellasamy Nadar Arts and Science College and the Madurai Kamaraj University.

SRM beat Sathyabama University in the final. Selva Prabhu of BBA (second year) was declared the best player of the tournament.

The results: Final: SRM University bt Sathyabama University 25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 25-12.

Quarterfinals: SRM University bt PSG College, Coimbatore, 25-17, 25-18; League: SRM bt Sethu Institute of Technology 25-18, 25-18, 25-18. SRM bt Sri Krishna Arts College, Coimbatore, 25-15, 25-12, 25-16.

St. Joseph’s triumphs

St. Joseph’s College of Engineering clinched the title in the Anna University inter-zone football tournament held recently at the Adiyamam College of Engineering in Hosur. In the final, St. Joseph’s defeated Sethi Institute of Technology, Madurai, 4-2.

ITF tennis

The qualifying rounds of the India Cements-TTT ITF Juniors tennis got underway on Saturday at the Triangular Tennis Trust courts with 40 first-round matches — 25 boys matches and 15 girls matches — in the u-18 category. After Sunday’s second qualifying round, six boys and six girls will go through to the main draw, which begins on Monday.

Suryapprakash, Baik to lead

L. Suryapprakash and I.T. Thabarak Baik will lead the City and the Combined Districts under-19 cricket teams respectively in the two one-day games to be played on September 9 and 10 in Tirunelveli.

The teams: City u-19: L. Suryapprakash (Capt.), M. Praveen Srivatsan, Shravan Krishnan, R. Rohit (wk), S. Karthik (wk), Garry Anthony Dumenil, N. Suraj, S. Senthilnathan, R.D. Ashwin Kumar, P.K. Dharma, V. Nishanth, S. Vishaal, R. Saravana Kumar, J. Joel Joseph, M. Ashwin, A.H.M. Suhail.

Volleyball tournament

The Nedungadu Sports Club will conduct an all-India volleyball tournament, sponsored by Aircel, at the Municipality ground at Karaikal (Puducherry) from September 10 to 14. Ten teams — five men and five women — will participate in the tournament. The men’s section consists of ONGC, IOB (Chennai), Southern Railway, Indian Bank and SDAT. The women’s five will be SCR, Armed Police, Dr. Sivanthi Club, JBAS.
