Nagapattinam
NAGAPATTINAM: More houses should be built under the Indira Awaaz Yojana (IAY) scheme in rural areas in Nagapattinam district and the present sanction of about 2,300 houses should be increased to help the poor to build houses, said Mani Shankar Aiyar, Union Minister for Panchayati Raj, on Saturday. Presiding over the district vigilance and monitoring committee meeting organised by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) at Mayiladuturai, he reviewed the progress of various Centre-sponsored development works. The Minister said that the banks should sanction loans quickly for constructing rural houses under the IAY scheme. The present allocation of Rs.58,500 per house is insufficient, he said. Mr Aiyar appealed to the district administration to send proposals requesting for allocation of more houses and funds for constructing houses under the IAY scheme in the district. Reviewing the development works being carried out in rural areas under the National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREG), Mr Aiyar said that the works were progressing well and pointed out that nearly Rs.103 crore had so far been disbursed as wages in the last three and half years for about 2.16 lakh labourers under the NREG scheme. He said that the Centre had allocated Rs.62.26 crore for payment of wages to the workers for the current year 2008-09 under NREG scheme of which Rs.43.82 crore had so far been sanctioned of which Rs.41.42 crore had already been disbursed. The Minister who reviewed other development works being carried out by the DRDA asked the officials to speed up and complete them within the stipulated time. M. Jayaraman, Collector, said that development works in villages including creation of ponds, desilting of tanks, irrigation channels, laying of mud roads were being carried out and each worker was being paid an average wage of Rs.80 per day depending on the nature of work. S. Rajakumar, M. Panneerselvam and M.K.Periyasamy, MLAs, K. Arunmani, Project Officer, DRDA, participated.
